How Can You Recognise Superficial AI-Generated Content?

More and more texts are now written entirely, or at least partly, with artificial intelligence. Many people consider this convenient, and in some situations it certainly can be. However, blindly publishing an AI-generated text also comes with risks.

AI content may lack human knowledge, proper fact-checking and first-hand experience. It often contains little concrete or genuinely useful information. So how can you recognise superficial AI-generated content, especially when expertise, safety and trust are essential?

1. The Text Remains General and Predictable

One of the clearest signs of superficial AI content is that the text remains broad and predictable. It often consists of obvious statements and advice that could apply to almost any situation.

A text may describe something as important, valuable or essential without explaining why or going into any real depth.

Take an article about job interviews, for example. It might say:

“A good preparation is important for a successful job interview.”

Although this statement is correct, it does not tell the reader what good preparation actually involves.

A more useful version would include practical examples, such as writing down questions about the company and the role, researching how the team works together and considering whether your experience matches the job requirements.

The more concrete the advice, the more valuable the content becomes.

2. Many Words but Little Substance

AI-generated content can also be unnecessarily long while offering very little meaningful information. A simple point may be explained across several paragraphs, with the same message repeated in slightly different words.

There are several warning signs to look out for. The conclusion may be almost identical to the introduction, for example. Different paragraphs may offer essentially the same advice, and the text may contain few facts, examples or new insights.

A long text may appear substantial, but once all repetition and filler are removed, very little useful information remains.

After reading, ask yourself: what have I actually learned?

When the answer is “not very much,” the content may be superficial or largely AI-generated.

3. Concrete Examples Are Missing

High-quality content shows how advice works in practice. Examples help readers understand what they need to do, while superficial content often remains theoretical.

Imagine an article about working from home that includes the following advice:

“Create a productive working environment.”

Again, the statement is not wrong, but it does not explain how to create such an environment.

A more practical version would be:

“Place your desk in a fixed location if possible, turn off notifications when you need to concentrate and agree with the people you live with when you should not be disturbed.”

Examples make a text easier to understand and help the reader apply the information in practice.

4. The Text Has No Clearly Defined Target Audience

Another common sign of superficial AI content is the absence of a clearly defined audience. A strong text is always written with a specific reader in mind.

For example, an article about exercise could be aimed at beginners, experienced athletes, people recovering from an injury, older adults who want to remain mobile or people training for a competition.

Each of these groups needs different information and advice.

AI-generated texts often remain generic. A sentence such as “exercise several times a week” does not clarify who the advice is intended for. It could apply to a beginner, an experienced athlete or someone who has not exercised for years.

Without a clear target audience, a text quickly becomes vague and less useful.

5. The Text Does Not Take a Clear Position

AI-generated content can often be recognised by its reluctance to take a clear position. AI tends to remain cautious and neutral. It presents various options, lists advantages and disadvantages and avoids drawing a firm conclusion.

A text may repeatedly state that a particular approach has both benefits and drawbacks without helping the reader decide which option is most suitable.

Even when the article ends with a conclusion, that conclusion may simply repeat the main points rather than offering a meaningful recommendation or perspective.

A strong piece of content does not always have to be provocative, but it should make clear choices and support them with relevant arguments.

6. Nuance and Exceptions Are Missing

Superficial AI-generated content often presents advice as though it applies to everyone, without acknowledging exceptions or context.

For example:

“You need to get up at five o’clock every morning to be productive.”

Such a statement is far too simplistic. A productive morning also depends on how much sleep someone has had, their natural rhythm, their health and their personal or professional responsibilities.

Advice becomes more credible when it acknowledges these differences. Good content explains when a recommendation is useful, for whom it works and under which circumstances it may not apply.

7. The Tone Is Overly Polished or Unnatural

Texts written by AI are often grammatically correct. However, they can still feel distant, artificial or overly polished.

There are several characteristics that may reveal this. Every paragraph may have approximately the same length, the same types of phrases may appear repeatedly and the tone may remain consistently formal and professional.

There are often no sharp observations, surprising formulations, humour or personality. The text may be technically correct but still fail to sound human.

In other words, it lacks a distinctive voice.

8. The Text Always Follows the Same Structure

Superficial AI content is also often built around the same predictable format.

It may begin with a general introduction, followed by an explanation of a concept, a list of benefits or tips and a conclusion that summarises everything once again.

There is nothing inherently wrong with this structure. However, when every article follows exactly the same pattern, the content begins to feel repetitive and interchangeable.

A good writer varies the structure depending on the subject, the audience and the purpose of the text.

What Does Substantive Content Look Like?

Strong content should be informative, engaging and distinctive. This is where an experienced copywriter or content writer can make a real difference.

A professional writer can immerse themselves in the character of a company and create texts that sound recognisable and consistent. They can apply the right tone of voice, introduce personality and, when appropriate, add a subtle sense of humour.

Good content is not created simply by putting information on a page. It also requires an understanding of what matters to the reader, how a particular audience should be addressed and which arguments are most likely to persuade them.

An experienced writer also considers the purpose of the text. An informative blog requires a different approach from a sales page designed to promote a product or service.

A writer can also avoid predictable expressions. AI tools frequently produce phrases such as “quality is our top priority.” Although this sounds positive, it says very little. A professional writer will look for a more specific claim and explain how that quality is demonstrated in practice.

Reliability and fact-checking are equally important. AI can misinterpret information, generate details that do not exist or rely on outdated sources. Without human control, these errors may end up in the final text.

Ultimately, relevant and original content written and reviewed by a person is valuable. It helps strengthen a company’s identity, builds trust with readers and supports long-term online visibility.

At Popi, you can have your content written by experienced copywriters who combine strategy, creativity and human expertise.
